[ noun ] an upright tripod for displaying something (usually an artist's canvas)
Used in print (Norman Kent, "The Watercolor Art of Roy M. Mason"...)I work on a watercolor easel in the field , and frequently resort to a large garden umbrella to protect my eyes from undue strain . (Jay Williams, The Forger....)We all painted in our spare_time , and we had all started as easel painters with scholarships , but he was the only one of us who made any regular money at it . It does n't embrace only the artist , alone before his easel . We hold safe little jobs illustrating tooth-paste ads or the salacious incidents in trivial novels , and most_of our easel painting is nothing but picking the fluff out of the navel so it can be contemplated in greater purity .
